Piano and keyboard Note Reading Practice
The piano is the instrument that makes music notation click for most people, because every note on the stave has one fixed key. Pianists read two staves at once: the treble clef for the right hand and the bass clef for the left. Middle C sits between them, a short ledger line below the treble stave and above the bass stave.
What to know about reading for piano / keyboard
Clef: Treble and bass clef (the "grand staff"). Pitch: Piano music is written exactly where it sounds (no transposition).
- Right hand usually reads treble clef; left hand usually reads bass clef.
- Middle C (C4) is the landmark that joins the two staves.
- Black keys are written with sharps (♯) and flats (♭), either in a key signature or beside a note.
- The app's keyboard answer mode lets you tap the key you think the note belongs to.
Practice tips
- Learn three landmark notes in each clef first: middle C, treble G and bass F.
- Practise one hand at a time until each clef feels automatic.
- Name the note before you look at the keys. If you can name it, your fingers will find it.
- Use the app's 60-second challenge to build speed once accuracy is steady.
Where the notes sit
See the full chart for your clef: treble clef notes, bass clef notes or alto clef notes. Add key signatures once the stave feels easy.
Frequently asked questions
Which clef should a beginner pianist learn first?
Most piano methods start with treble clef for the right hand, with a few notes around middle C, then add bass clef for the left hand. In this app, choose Piano and start with the Landmarks level in either clef.
Why does piano use two clefs?
The piano's range is far too wide for one stave. Splitting it into treble and bass keeps most notes inside the five lines instead of drowning in ledger lines.
How do I find middle C on the keyboard?
Find the group of two black keys near the centre of the keyboard. The white key just to the left of that pair is C. Middle C is the one closest to the middle of the piano.
Can I practise on a keyboard instead of a piano?
Yes. Any keyboard works. Choose Piano / keyboard and the keyboard answer mode, or play the note and let the microphone check it.
