About Note Reading Practice
Note Reading Practice is a free tool and guide for learning to read music notes on any instrument.
Why it exists
Reading music is the skill that unlocks everything else on an instrument, but practice tools are often built for one instrument or one language. This site is built to work for a recorder class in Leeds, a violin student in Lyon and a pianist in Warsaw. You pick an instrument, a clef and a level, and every note is played aloud.
Editorial standards
Resources reviewed by qualified UK primary and secondary school teachers. Content aligned to the National Curriculum.
- Accuracy first. Note positions, clefs, key signatures and transposition intervals are checked against standard music-theory references before publication.
- Plain language. We explain ideas in short sentences and avoid unnecessary jargon.
- Honest limits. Where the trainer is a guide rather than an authority (for example, recorder fingerings vary between systems), we say so.
- No hidden promotion. Recommendations are not influenced by payment. See our disclosure page.
